alexa.gifWell, according to Alexa, YouTube is now bigger than Google. How can that be? Well, because it’s not true. Alexa has proven, yet again, it’s an unreliable source for measuring traffic of even the biggest sites on the net. TechCrunch points out that even Compete, a newcomer who measures traffic in the same way, shows Google being more popular than it’s video sharing site.

TechCrunch also provides the chart by Alexa:

I agree with Michael Arrington. Getting small websites, such as my own, is understandable. Measuring traffic levels for blogs, etc., would be difficult. But, Google and YouTube? That’s pathetic.

It needs a complete renovation. Though, as long as it continues to use the methods it uses to measure, it won’t be any more reliable. In case you don’t know, Alexa uses toolbars individuals volunteer to install, to determine site rankings. It’s undependable and easily manipulated.

For reliable statistics, I recommend Google Analytics. The only problem is that the public doesn’t really have instant access to rankings. It’s for site owners.

That being said, does anyone have any other recommendations?
